The World of Beauty and Body Care in Indonesia is Getting More Sustainable

In recent years, the beauty and body care industry in Indonesia has experienced significant growth. Not only women are taking care of themselves, but men are also interested in doing the same. Changes in people’s lifestyles, increased health awareness, the use of social media and technological advances have been the main drivers in making the world of beauty and body care in Indonesia more sustainable. Innovations in beauty products, such as skincare and advanced beauty tools, have provided a more effective and convenient experience for both female and male consumers. For example, technology-based beauty devices such as laser, ultrasound, radio frequency and so on are increasingly popular in the market.

Aside from being effective and convenient, there is also a growing interest in sustainable beauty products. Local and international brands are starting to adopt sustainable practices in their production, using natural ingredients, reducing the use of harmful chemicals and not involving animals as testing materials (cruelty-free). In addition, consumers are also increasingly aware of the importance of environmentally friendly packaging and are starting to choose products with recyclable packaging. Thus, in addition to maintaining skin beauty, this can preserve biodiversity and protect nature. Examples of beauty brands that are taking this step include Somethinc, BLP Beauty, Sensatia Botanicals, Base, Klen and Kind, Martha Tilaar, Wardah, and Polka Beauty.

Indonesia, as a country with a majority Muslim population, is also witnessing the development of the halal beauty industry. The demand for halal beauty products in Indonesia is strengthened by Law No.33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Guarantee. Halal beauty products not only meet the needs of Muslim consumers, but also attract consumers from various backgrounds. Halal certification on beauty products is increasingly valued as a sign of quality and safety. This is because it has been recognized as halal by the Halal Guarantee Agency (BPJH) of the Ministry of Religious Affairs based on a written halal fatwa issued by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

Not only that, social media also plays a key role in shaping beauty trends in Indonesia. The emergence of social media platforms for sharing photos or videos such as Instagram, TikTok, Youtube or other social media has encouraged many people to care for and maintain healthy skin as well as look attractive, beautiful and handsome. Through these platforms, beauty influencers and beauty enthusiasts have also emerged who actively share tips, product reviews, beauty tutorials and provide inspiration and information to the public. This not only influences consumer preferences of both women and men, but also motivates the growth of online beauty businesses.

With all these developments, it is safe to say that the world of beauty and body care in Indonesia is not only growing, but also becoming more sustainable. Factors such as technology, environmental awareness, diverse market needs, and the role of social media continue to shape the industry in a more progressive and inclusive direction.
